The Best VampirosA Crossover look at the best bloodsuckers of all time
True Blood... Twilight... Gabriel... It seems like no matter where you look today, a vampire is lurking somewhere in the shadows. To officially kickoff the Halloween season, we've put together a list of the 20 most-popular pop culture vampires of all time. Enjoy! -
The Best VampirosThe mother of all vampires, Akasha begins as an Egyptian queen thousands of years ago. After being awakened by the vampire Lestat's rock music, Akasha plots to kill 99 percent of the world's human men. Her dream is to establish a new Eden in which women will worship her as a goddess. She threatens the vampires who refuse to play along with her evil scheme with death and a big battle ensues. -
The Best VampirosWe first met this "vampire with a soul" during the first season of the hit television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Although he was originally killed-off on the final episode of show's second season, this champion for the forces of good was brought back to life the next fall to set up his self-titled spinoff series. It just goes to show that good vampires really can't go wrong. -
The Best VampirosThis vampire, who arose from the Dark Shadows, is a true anti-hero in the gothic novel sense of the word. After being released from his hidden tomb-prison by the wanna-be jewel thief Willie Loomis, Barnabas lurks around the town of Collinsport trying to find his ideal vampire bride. The story gets even more complicated from there! -
The Best VampirosIn Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series, Bill is a vampire who was turned shortly after the American Civil War. He courts and woos telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie, who is relieved at the "silence" of Bill's thoughts, experiences her first physical relationship with this creature of the night. You can see more of Bill on HBO's original series True Blood. -
The Best VampirosSpeaking of cult classics, in the movie that bears this vampire's belittling name, African prince Mamuwalde is transformed into a vampire and then imprisoned in a sealed coffin by Count Dracula. He only escapes his prison almost 200 years later and is then consumed by the desire to meet and woo the lovely Tina, who he believes to be the reincarnation of his beloved wife. -
The Best VampirosThe title character in the comic book, movie and television series that bare his name was born to a mortal mother who was attacked by a vampire shortly before giving birth and dying. The attacker passed along some of his genetic material to Blade, making him a quasi-vampire who ironically grows up to be a butt-kicking vampire hunter. -
The Best VampirosBack in 1987, when The Lost Boys first debuted in movie theaters around the world, this blond-haired bad boy was the envy of teenage boys everywhere. Girls of all ages gushed over the head vampire of the cult classic and more than a few hearts were broken when he was "antlered" to death. Not fair! -
The Best VampirosPerhaps the best-known vampire of all time, the Count became a world-renowned figure after the publication of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula in 1897. Bela Lugosi's suave and debonair characterization forever changed the face of Dracula, who was originally written as a monster. -
The Best VampirosThe Count was forever changed again after actor Leslie Neilsen took on the role in the Mel Brooks comedy Dracula: Dead and Loving It. With such inspired lines like, "Oh, it's night-time. I was having a daymare," this characterization of the classic vampire is a barrel of laughs. -
The Best VampirosEdward, one of the main characters of the Twilight series of novels, is another example of a vampire who falls in love with the wrong person, the human Bella. Like all vampires in the Twilight world, he possesses superhuman beauty, strength, speed, endurance, and agility. He does have one unique additional power, the ability to read minds. Try keeping a secret from him! -
The Best VampirosBetter known as "the Brat Prince," Lestat is an incredibly vain and self-centered vampire. The openly bisexual Lestat has some superhuman powers including telepathy, super-strength, telekinesis and the ability to be in the sun. A lover of the arts, Lestat goes on to become a rock star in Queen of the Damned and awakens the evil Akasha with his music. -
The Best VampirosThe central character in Anne Rice's 1976 novel Interview with the Vampire is a very tragic figure. Overwhelmed with grief after his brother's death, Louis wants to end his life, but isn't man enough to do the deed himself. The vampire Lestat (we'll get to him in a minute) "turns" Louis and the two go on to share a questionable relationship... -
The Best VampirosWe'll end our look at vampires in popculture with the star of the German silent movie Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. While Count Orlok was based on the Dracula story, he lacks all of his counterpart's charm. Physically, Orlok looks like a cross between a spider and a rat and he sleeps in soil infected with the plague, carrying disease to all who cross his path. He just may be the scariest vampire ever! -
The Best VampirosPepito, the central figure in the Cuban cartoon ¡Vampiros en La Habana!, is a trumpet player / political activist who was used by his scientist uncle as a test subject for a potion that counteracts the usually fatal effects of sunlight. The result? Pepito only realizes he's a vamp when his uncle tells him. -
The Best VampirosWe first met Rafael when he debuted in the second videogame in the Soulcalibur series before he was even a vampire. While his transformation was implied in the third game in the series, it wasn't confirmed until the fourth game when we learn that his critical finish includes a neckbite. A vampire that's also quick with a sword? I wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley! -
The Best VampirosSelene is the central figure of the Underworld movie series. After having been "turned", she became a death dealer and fought against the Lycans until she fell in love with one named Michael Corvin. Selene is very serious in nature and rarely smiles. She is proficient with an array of weapons and shows some superhuman powers after drinking some of Alexander Corvinus' blood. -
The Best VampirosSpike, who was grand-sired by Angel, went from being Buffy the Vampire Slayer's version of Sid Vicious to being the show's ultimate hero. What brought about the change? Well, after killing two slayers in cold blood, Spike moves on to fall in love with Buffy and undergoes the demon trials to get his soul back. Talk about ironic! -
The Best VampirosThe star of a series of comic books that bare her name, Vampirella was originally presented as an inhabitant of the planet Drakulon. After her planet's destruction, Vampirella came to Earth in order to survive. Although she might technically be considered an alien, Vampirella has many of the same characteristics of traditional vampires, including the thirst for blood and the ability to shift shapes.
