The Queen of the South conquered the United States during its premiere on February 28th, achieving an average, 1,534,000 Adults 18-49 and 2.4 million total viewers (Persons 2+), making it the most-watched novela premiere in Telemundo’s history.
The Telemundo Internacional production’s performance among Women 18-49 averaged 779,000 and 755,000 among Men 18-49. The premiere also delivered 895,000 Adults 18-34. During it second episode, it surpassed its premiere by 23% with an average of 1,876,500 among adults 18-49.
This epic original production filled with adrenaline and suspense has been filmed in three continents – America, Europe, and Africa. – and five countries. Based on the best-selling novel by Arturo Perez-Reverte that has been translated into 32 languages, this telenovela narrates the story of the legendary Maria Teresa Mendoza, personified by the international superstar Kate del Castillo.
Teresa Mendoza, a humble young woman from Sinaloa, Mexico, finds her life taking a drastic turn when she falls in love with the wrong man, the handsome El Güero Avila. A Chicano pilot from San Antonio, Texas, Avila is involved in drug trafficking for the powerful drug lord, Epifanio Vargas.
Avila warns Teresa that if the telephone rings, it means that he is dead and that his enemies will come for her - because in the dark business of drug trafficking, people must pay for treason with their own life and the lives of their loved ones.
When she receives that dreaded and fateful phone call, Teresa is forced to escape to Spain. A series of subsequent events – spanning over three continents – will mark her life forever.
Teresa eventually arrives in Melilla, a Spanish city in Northern Africa, where she falls in love with another handsome drug dealer, Santiago Fisterra, who shares with her all of the secrets about speed boating, sailing and surviving the Straits of Gibraltar. Teresa ends up in prison, where her cellmate, Patricia O’Farrel, turns her into a refined and elegant woman. Upon her release, Teresa becomes linked to the Russian mafia, and in a mostly male-dominated industry, becomes the head of the grand empire of a drug ring.
