MIAMI, August 12, 2013 - The channel’s division of NBCUniversal International Television launches the Telemundo channel in Africa today. This telenovela channel, available in English and Portuguese, is a pioneer in the territory, with a presence in more than 48 countries in the continent through Multichoice’s digital pay-TV satellite platform, DStv.
The launch was preceded by a major event in the city of Johannesburg, where local media and clients joined and welcomed Telemundo’s talent, including Rafael Amaya, Aylín Mujica, David Chocarro, Catherine Siachoque, Jorge Luis Pila and Angelica Celaya, who participated as special guests in a variety of activities during the launch festivities of the Telemundo channel.
Telemundo Internacional has distributed its content to the African continent with great success since 2006 and now reaffirms its presence with the launch of a telenovela channel designed specifically for the territory. Marcos Santana, President of the international division of Telemundo Media shares, "Telemundo is the first Latino channel dubbed into English and Portuguese that is geared completely towards the territories of South Africa and Sub-Sahara. We are pleased to make this great step into a market that demands excellence in content because what characterizes our telenovelas is the quality of our productions.”
Under the tag line "Telemundo - Feel the passion", the network will offer successful titles, of genres including romance, mystery, adventure and action, for the enjoyment of viewers. Among the telenovelas to be released with the launch of the channel are Precious Rose, Aurora, My Heart Beats for Lola Volcán and Behind Closed Doors, all featuring highly acclaimed actors such as Mauricio Ochmann, Maritza Rodriguez, Miguel Varoni, Gabriel Porras, Carmen Villalobos, and Jencarlos Canela.
These titles will be seen for the first time in the region and are part of the channel’s agreement to provide 1,400 hours of telenovelas. Also, to premiere in the near future is The Del Monte Dynasty, whose lead male actor, Mario Cimarro, is one of the most well recognized and regarded actors in the continent. Among the countries to enjoy the programming of this pay-TV channel are South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola and Mozambique; the latter two in the Portuguese language.
Telemundo Internacional is a division of Telemundo Media dedicated to the sale and distribution of the network’s original content and of a programming catalog from different industry leaders in the international market. Part of the business philosophy of this division is to identify new development ideas to create original content and generate innovative businesses for the different television platforms.
